Begin with the actual mattress

Measure its width, length and depth; nominal sizes can vary slightly between manufacturers.

Map every obstruction

Mark sockets, switches, skirting, windows, doors and wardrobes before setting the headboard and base dimensions.

Tape the proposed outline on the floor, then walk through the room and open every door before approval.
